The team of Saint Petersburg Yacht Club BRONENOSEC SAILING TEAM finished at the fifth place

23-09-2017

On the 23rd of September, the 52 SUPER SERIES 2017 finished with the victory of the Italian team AZZURRA in the final event, which had been held on the Spanish island of Menorca since the 19th of September. The victory in Spain brought the victory in the season’s overall to the Italians – the third since 2012. The team of Saint Petersburg Yacht Club BRONENOSEC SAILING TEAM finished the event and the season in general at the fifth place.

11 teams, which participated in the sixth event of TP52 Menorca Sailing Week 2017, made a great show for the spectators, when there were five teams striving to win the medals of the event and minimum three teams striving to become the winner of the 52 SUPER SERIES 2017, before the start of the final day of the competitions and season in general. But no matter what the plans of the fleet’s leaders were, they were not destined to come true. Menorca, being captured by light winds all the days of the championship, turned out to be almost breezeless on the last day of the event. The fleet was afloat for several hours, waiting for the start, but unstable wind did not let the yachts go to the course. The results of the previous day were recognized as final.

And there was what to fight for. The Italian crew became the winner of the event and the season on count back: the British team GLADIATOR had the same 22 points. The silver medal of Menorca Sailing Week 2017 has been the best result of GLADIATOR so far. The winner of 2016, 2014, and 2013 seasons – QUANTUM RACING team from the USA - was only three points behind the competitors in the score table of the event and nine points - in the score table of the season, having finished on the third place in both overall standings. Active TP52 World Champions  – the German team PLATOON – finished the 52 SUPER SERIES at the second place, which is also the best result of the Germans ever.

All in all, the 2017 52 SUPER SERIES season turned out to be really eventful. For the first time since 2014, the fleet visited the USA and had two races there (and they were directly counted in the season) and for the first time in three years the series consisted of six events. Moreover, AZZURRA became the only team that managed to win twice in the events of the 2017 series. All in all, five teams out of ten became the winners of the events.

“All these facts prove once again the highest level of the crews, participating in the series, - Vladimir Liubomirov, helmsman of the team BRONENOSEC, says, - and the competition will be even tougher next year, when new teams appear.»

The team of Saint Petersburg Yacht Club BRONENOSEC SAILING TEAM demonstrated unstable results in the third season of TP52 class. At the season’s start, the team was balancing somewhere in the middle of the table. It managed to change the situation for the better during Porto Cervo Race at the end of June, when BRONENOSEC received its second silver medal in the series. Later on, after the seventh result in Puerto Portals, the crew of the Russian boat astonished everyone by winning three out of six races during the final event. The chances of BRONENOSEC to get on the victory podium once again in this season were unbelievably high, but capricious weather stopped the plan from realization.

“There is no doubt that the team has a big potential, and we have proven it more than once, - V. Liubomirov continues, - but we still cannot achieve stable results, and this characterizes our performance. We have improved our result a little bit in comparison with the previous year, when we finished at the sixth place, but even to be among top 5 does not satisfy our expectations. I believe that one more important characteristic feature of the last season is that more and more Russian sportsmen have joined the crew. In 2017, there were six Russian sportsmen in the team. And we will continue to go this way in the future.”

The 2018 52 SUPER SERIES season will start at the end of May. The TP52 fleet expands its geography and will compete in Croatia for the first time. The resort town of Šibenik, Dolmatia, will host the first event of the new season. .
