The 54-gun ship-of-the-line of the fourth rank “Poltava” was launched to water on 27th of May – the City Day of Saint Petersburg. Festive ceremony of the battleship launch was held according to the naval historical traditions.

The cannon shot was a signal to start the ceremony. Then honorary guests congratulated all the attendees upon this festive occasion. The honorary guests of the ceremony were:

Chairman of the Management Committee of PAO Gazprom Alexey Miller,

Plenipotentiary representative of the President in the Northern-Western Federal District Alexander Beglov,

Governor of Saint Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko,

Chief Commander of the Navy Admiral Vladimir Korolev,

Metropolitan Bishop of Saint Petersburg and Ladoga Varsonophiy.

“The glorious naval victories of Russia were formed at Saint Petersburg shipyards. The 54-gun battleship “Poltava” was the first ship, which was constructed at the Admiralty shipyard, and 300 years later we took decision to reconstruct this legendary ship as a token of respect.” - Chairman of the Management Committee of PAO Gazprom Alexey Miller said at the festive ceremony.

During the ceremony, the Head of Gazprom presented a cup with silver coins – one coin for each gun port – to the chief builder of the ship Mikhail Plekhanov. This tradition was established back in Peter’s time.

The Metropolitan Bishop of Saint Petersburg and Ladoga Varsonophiy held the ship naming ceremony. Then the godmother of “Poltava” Elena Kalinina – sportswoman of Sailing Academy of Saint Petersburg Yacht Club – crashed a bottle of champagne on the ship’s bow. The Governor of Saint Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko gave an order to launch the ship.

The ship was launched to water with the help of a crane. The procedure lasted for approximately 30 minutes. When the Poltava touched the water, the cannons fired a festive shot.

The construction of the unique wooden ship will be finished in Saint Petersburg Yacht Club. It will take about 10 months. During this time, they will install all the necessary systems, masts, rigs, ropes, sails, put the ballast, finish the interior design. Tours at the “Poltava” battleship will start again after the launch, approximately on the 20th of June.

Background Information:
