On the 27th of February, 2014, the keel of the “Poltava” battleship replica was laid. Two parts of the keel were connected on that day. According to one of the maritime traditions, a golden coin was placed in the lock (where two parts of the keel are connected). The general partner of the project is PJSC Gazprom.
It took almost a year to find the right wood for the construction of the keel. A keel is the foundation of the ship, its oak “backbone”. Thus, the requirements to the quality of wood are very high. Let’s recall all together, how the ship was constructed: from the moment, when its keel was laid to the moment, when the ship was taken out of the hangar.
The Poltava is on the water now, the construction works continue. We are planning to equip the ship: to install rigs, ropes, and sails.
For Saint Petersburg Yacht Club, historical research and restoration works are top priorities. The historical shipbuilding yard “Poltava” and the Foundation for Support, Reconstruction, and Revival of Historic Boats and Classical Yachts were established for this reason.
Chairman of the Management Board and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of PJSC Gazprom Alexey Miller initiated the construction of the battleship “Poltava”.
The historical shipbuilding yard “Poltava” has a united team of shipbuilders and designers, who have reconstructed a realistic replica of the first battleship of the Baltic fleet - 54-gun battleship “Poltava”. The ship was named in honor of the victory of the Russian forces in the Poltava Battle. The “Poltava” was built at the Admiralty Shipyard and launched into water in June 1712. Peter the Great himself participated in the design and construction of the ship.
The festive launching ceremony was held on the 27th of May 2018 according to the historical maritime traditions. The ceremony was attended by Chairman of the Management Board of PJSC Gazprom Alexey Miller, plenipotentiary representative of the President in the Northwestern Federal District Alexander Beglov, Governor of Saint Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko, Commander-in-Chief of the Navy Admiral Vladimir Korolev, Metropolitan Barsanuphius of Saint Petersburg and Ladoga.
The World Champion in kitesurfing and sportswoman of the Sailing Academy Elena Kalinina became a godmother of the ship.
When all the construction works are done, the ship will become a center of a large modern interactive museum complex, dedicated to the maritime history of Russia.
