The third event of the Kiteboarding World Cup in Formula Kite discipline finished in China

The competitions took place on the Eastern coast of China at the Pingtan Island. This event is traditionally marked by the most extreme weather conditions. The gusts of strong wind, caused by the typhoon, which had borne down on the east of China at the beginning of September, were up to 30 knots. After the relatively weak winds of 6-8 knots at the previous event in Weifang such weather conditions seemed really extreme.

28 sportsmen from 13 countries took part in the regatta. The third event at the Pingtan Island is the last but one before the Kiteboarding World Cup finals in the Italian Cagliari from the 2nd to the 6th of October. So all the strongest sportsmen came to the East of China, hoping to improve their position in the overall standing before the final event.

The sportswoman of Sailing Academy Elena Kalinina had finished in the top three among women in the first two events. The Russian sportswoman had finished at the third place in the Italian Gizzeria and at the second place – in the Chinese Weifang. At the second event, Elena Kalinina had outraced the current winner of the World Cup Kirstyn O’Brien from the US. The American sportswoman, who likes to race in strong winds, came to Pingtan with a desire to gain revenge on the Russian competitor.

Another American sportswoman Daniela Moroz, who had won at the two previous events, proved the status of the leader starting with the first races. She took leadership on the first day and did not let her competitors come closer. In light of this, Daniela became the winner of the regatta among women with 202 points and took the 12th place in the overall standing.

There was predictably a tough competition for the second line of the tournament table. Almost in every race, Kirstyn was a bit stronger than the Russian sportswoman Elena Kalinina. The extreme weather conditions of Pingtan suited the American sportswoman better. On the final day of the regatta, the organizers had to cancel the races because of the squally wind. According to the results of 17 races, O’Brien outperformed Elena Kalinina by 23 points.

“I competed with Elena Kalinina and Khairan Zhang, – the silver medal holder Kirstyn O’Brien says. – I like to race alongside those sportswomen. The competition and rivalry make the races more interesting. I learn a lot, when I see, which side the competitors choose, with what speed and angle they go. Thus, I understand, what works better.”

“The weather conditions had been easier at the second event in Weifang. I had raced better in the weak and medium wind, – Elena Kalinina, who took bronze at the third event of the World Cup says. – But in Pingtan, the weather conditions were difficult: strong wind, big waves, and a lot of waste in the water. The beginning of the regatta turned out to be not very good for me: I chose a wrong kite size and lost in several races because of that, then my trapeze tore all of a sudden. I was not fully ready for the difficult conditions. All in all, it was more like a training regatta for me. I analyzed the speeds, checked the equipment and came to the conclusion that I have to work more with the strong wind. I think, this regatta will be useful for me before the most important competitions of the season.”

We would like to remind you that the final part of the KiteFoil World Series will take place from the 2nd to the 6th of October in Cagliari. And the World Beach Games, which are organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), will take place in Qatar from the 11th to the 12th of October. The sportswoman of Sailing Academy Elena Kalinina will fight for medals in these regattas as well.
