A unique project for the youth “Hope of the Seas” has been implemented since August 2015, with direct involvement of Saint Petersburg Yacht Club and the Foundation for Support, Reconstruction, and Revival of Historical Ships and Classical Yachts.
For the Yacht Club and the Foundation, the main goal of the project was to rejuvenate the tradition of trainings under the sails for students and young people of Saint Petersburg.
The legendary schooner “Nadezhda”, which was constructed and launched to water in Holland in 1912, made a journey around the world under the command of Count Felix von Luckner and became the main training sailing ship of the Nakhimov Naval School in 1948 and later the Central yacht club of Leningrad, was chosen as the main training ship of the project, implemented by Saint Petersburg Yacht Club and the Foundation for Support, Reconstruction, and Revival of the Historical Ships and Classical Yachts. Having changed several names: Sterna - Edelgard - Seeteufel – Nadezhda (Hope) – Leningrad and served as a training ship for several generations of young citizens of Leningrad, the schooner has returned back and joined the ranks after long-lasting repair works as part of Saint Petersburg Yacht Club and as a flagship of historical vessels’ fleet of the Foundation for Support, Reconstruction, and Revival of Historical Ships and Classical Yachts.
The Club and the Foundation have organizing preparatory training sea journeys. The main goal was to try out the schooner before the navigation of the next year. The students of four leading higher educational institutions of Saint Petersburg (ITMO University, Saint Petersburg Economic University, Mining University, Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University) participated in the sea journeys along the route Saint Petersburg – Chumnoy Fort – Konstantin Fort – Tolbukhin Fort – Totleben Fort – Saint Petersburg.
The Yacht Club and the Foundation plan to make the project larger and bring it from a regional to the international level.
We are actively negotiating with partner organizations of Rotterdam (The Kingdom of the Netherlands) about a possibility to implement a joint project in the sector of Sail Training International and attract young people of Russia and Holland to it, as well as experts of both countries. The cooperation will circle around the schooner “Nadezhda”, being a part of the cultural and historical heritage of Holland and Russia.
