Victory and finish on the third place on the decisive day of the competitions brought a silver medal to the team of Saint Petersburg Yacht Club BRONENOSEC SAILING TEAM in the forth event of the 52 Super Series that finished in the Italian sailing Mecca – Porto Cervo - on Sunday, June 25. It is the third medal since the start of the series in 2015 and the first one this year for the Russian team.
“It was not easy for us to get a good result in Porto Cervo. Starting with the first event of the series in January we wanted to be in top 3, but we managed to reach our goal only now, - skipper, Commodore of Saint Petersburg Yacht Club Vladimir Liubomirov says. – We were lacking high speed at the beginning of the season, unfortunate accidents disturbed us, as it was during the decisive race in Miami, but now it seems to me that we have fulfilled all the tasks 101% and that gave us a good result!”
Already on the first days of the fourth event of the 52 Super Series, which started on Sardinia on the 21st of June, BRONENOSEC demonstrated the ability and desire to achieve the goals. Finishes outside the top 5 interlaced with finishes in top 3. After the second racing day, the team climbed to the second place of the standing. Then the competitors began to compete more actively and a tough fight for medals started.
Before the start of the decisive day, BRONENOSEC was on the fifth place but just several points separated the team of Saint Petersburg Yacht Club from the medal.
“We had to experience everything during this event: success and failures of false starts and penalties, but we managed to pull ourselves together in the decisive moment and achieved the goal,” – Alexey Kulakov, bowman of the team, comments. Before the start of the decisive race, there were as many as five teams that aspired to take places in top 3, but exactly the victory in the first race on the 25th of July and finish on the third place in the second race ensured BRONENOSEC SAILING TEAM with the second place of the standing. This being said, the team stopped just one point away from gold.
“We have a huge potential, we have a great crew and the best experts of technical service, and the most important thing is that we have support of Gazprom Company, - Vladimir Liubomirov continues. - I am convinced that we are on the right track and we will multiply our success!”
The veterans of this class – RAN team from Sweden – celebrated the victory with difference of one point to BRONENOSEC in Porto Cervo. Current World Champions – Quantum Racing team from the USA – took the third place. As far as the overall standing of the 52 Super Series 2017 is concerned, the Italian AZZURA still keeps the leading position, despite an unsuccessful performance “at home”. BRONENOSEC is on the sixth place in the standing of the season.
There are two more events of the series ahead of us that will take place in Spain: on Majorca at the end of July and on Menorca in the middle of September.
