TP52 World Championship finished on the 29th of August in Puerto Portals in Mallorca, which was at the same time the fourth event of 52SuperSeries. The German team Platoon became the winner of the competitions. The crew of Saint Petersburg Yacht Club has received the bronze medal for the first since it started to participate in ТР52 world championships.
It should come as no surprise that the final day of the World Championship turned out to be the most challenging, because all the teams till the seventh line of the championship table (where the current World Champions – American Quantum Racing – were placed) theoretically had chances to take gold from the German Platoon, which was leading at that time. Thus, all the teams had the German team “in their sights” and it seemed like they almost couldn’t stand the tension anymore. Müller-Spreer’s crew got the first penalty during the pre-start procedure of the first race of the day. Then two more penalties followed during the day plus two penalty points for collision with Quantum Racing.
Looking ahead, it should be noted that despite all the difficulties, the Germans were impressively good at this championship. Though the last day was the most unsuccessful for them, their strength reserve was enough to become the World Champions for the second time (the first gold was in 2017).
It was also a restless day for the highly-awarded Italian Azzurra. The team of Costa Smeralda Yacht Club also had an unsuccessful day but its strength reserve was just enough to outperform all its rivals by one point and keep the second place. It is the second silver medal of the World Championship for Italians in a row (and all in all Azzurra has much more titles in ТР52).
Well, a true superstar of the day was the Turkish-British Provezza. As we know, the boat of the Turks lost its mast in the first race of the first day. The crew managed to bring the old mast to the place of competitions, install it (with the help of the spare parts, lent from other teams) and come to the distance. And not only come there, but Ergin Imre’s crew astonished everyone with the best result of the day: they finished at the first and third places! Unfortunately, the weight of the points was too heavy for Provezza – it took the ninth place in the overall standing.
Having anticipated unparalleled competition on the water, Bronenosec continued to follow the well-tried strategy. The more so, since the wind was very light. It was not more than 6-7knots? Which were not the most advantageous weather conditions for Bronenosec. The team acted conservatively and with maximum caution during the races. However, it did not help them in the first race. It seemed that Bronenosec was going to be in top five at the rounding, but a sudden change of the wind moved the light blue boat to the end of the fleet. It took them efforts to finish at the seventh place.
They started to recover in the second (final, ninth) race – they were the fourth at the first sign and finished at the fourth place. Such result saved the bronze medal for Bronenosec with minimal margin to Sled from New York Yacht Club.
“We opened the championship with the seventh result and finished at the third place – it is a long way, which the team pulled through in course of four days, - the skipper of Bronenosec Vladimir Lyubomirov says. – Our medal is truly well-deserved, we were fighting for each meter of the distance with the most awarded teams of the planet and withstood unbelievable pressure! Now the medals of the season are at stake and we are convinced that we can fight for them!”
For Bronenosec, it is the first medal of the World Championship 2019 and the second this year. The team received the previous bronze medal at the second event in Porto Sherry. Thus, before the final event of the series, Bronenosec came close to the top three of the overall standing of 52SuperSeries 2019. Everything will be decided at the end of September in Porto Cervo.
