The races of 52 Super Series 2019 finished with a dramatic outcome on the 8th of September in Porto Cervo in Sardinia. Thanks to the astonishing self-command, the Italian Azzurra won the title of the season, and the team of Saint Petersburg Yacht Club finished the season at the well-deserved fourth place.
The first comparison of the teams’ seasonal ranking before the start of Audi 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week Porto Cervo on the 24th of September and after its completion on the 28th of September doesn’t reveal any changes in the top three. As a matter of fact, there were really no changes – the crews kept their positions. That was exactly, what the team Azzurra of the hosting Yacht Club Costa Smeralda was waiting for. A family team the Roemmers with Santiago Lange as a tactician came to the start of the decisive leg as a leader with a slight superiority over the German Platoon and was not going to give its place to the competitors. Everything went without a hitch.
But the race was not easy. First of all, the competitors were puzzled with an uneven rhythm of the regatta. The mistral wind, which arrived right at the beginning of the regatta, was the reason of cancelation of the first and third days of competitions – an unprecedented occasion in 52 Super Series. It is extremely difficult to keep stability under such conditions but the Italian crew managed to do it better than others.
It is interesting to note that already at the first race of the final day, Azzurra could have settled the situation for its benefit ahead of time, if it had won with the margin of four or more points. But Platoon was following the competitor at its heels and finished right after Azzurra in all the three races of the day. Nevertheless, it became clear after the second race that the Italians were about to take their third title of 52 Super Series winners since 2012. As for Platoon, it is the third silver medal in a row in 52 Super Series in 2017-2019. Three-times winner if the Golden Cup in Dragon class Harm Müller-Spreer still cannot get the long-hoped-for gold in 52 Super Series.
The American team Quantum Racing played an interesting role. The crew of the DeVos family was some kind of a “layer” between the aspirants to gold, which brought its fruits in the form of a bronze medal of the leg and 52 Super Series season.
The crew of the New York Yacht Club Sled became a true superstar of the leg in Porto Cervo. Takashi Okura’s team won with a significant margin, having incredible five victories in nine races.
For the Bronenosec team of Saint Petersburg Yacht Club, the season 2019 turned out to be the most successful, since they started to race in this class. They won two medals of the legs, including the bronze at TP52 World Championship – the first medal for Russia at the championships of this class since 2010 (Synergy won bronze back then).
Bronenosec had all the chances to take the medal from the Americans in Porto Cervo. Vladimir Lyuvomirov’s crew opened the races in the top three, but it was not racing stably later and finished at the fifth place. Bronenosec remained at the fourth line in the overall standing – the best result of the team so far.
“On the one hand, it is a pity that we couldn’t finish the season in the top three, though there were prerequisites for that, - the skipper of the team Vladimir Lyubomirov comments. – On the other hand, we returned after a year-long break to 52 Super Series and won two medals at five legs and were outplayed by the top three by ten points. It is a significant progress, which is worth being improved in the future.”
Meanwhile, 52 Super Series has already revealed the calendar of events of the anniversary year 2020. Several surprises are prepared for the future participants. First of all, the series will visit South Africa for the first time ever. Moreover, TP52 World Championship will be held there. Secondly, the European part of the calendar will consist of four legs, which gives six legs in total for the season. So many races will be organized for the first time since 2014.
