On the final day of the regatta, the strength of the wind was 5-7 knots. The wind would occasionally hush down during the races, but then it grew in intensity again. Thanks to the stable wind conditions and the efforts of the organizers, there were two races for each fleet.

“The “Optimists” are the youngest athletes in the sailing sport, but at the same time they are the most ambitious. - the President of the Optimist Class Association Vladimir Lyubomirov says. – The Championship of Russia is a competition, where they can get a title. The racers value this title high and are proud to hold it. It is also the first race of a new season, which is a qualification for the European and World Championships. On the one hand, this regatta marks the end of the year. On the other hand, it is a beginning of a new cycle, which gives it even more significance and turns up the heat.”

There was no sensation in the struggle for gold. Despite the finish at the tenth place in the tenth race, the sportsman of the sailing club “Vodnik” Artem Maksimkin had a confident win. Thanks to the fact that the unsuccessful finish at the tenth place was excluded, Artem received 10 points and outperformed the closest follower Kirill Shunenkov (Sailing Academy) by 22 points. The top three was completed by another racer of the Sailing Academy from the Children’s Sports Sailing Team “Rautu” Andrey Sotnikov with 48 points.

“Strange as it may sound, but the first day was the most difficult for me, as they kept us in the water for very long time before the races started. – the winner of the Championship of Russia Artem Maksimkin says. – We were expecting that the race might start at any moment because the wind would become stronger and hush down, they also changed the distance often. I was difficult to prepare for a race. I am planning to go to the World Championship, so I will get ready for it, I’ll go to a training camp at Lake Garda or in Turkey. All in all, I would like to become a member of the Olympic Team of Russia.”

There was a change of the leader among women on the final day. Alisa Ivanova from the sailing club “Vodnik” managed to outperform a sportswoman of the Sailing Academy Marina Babkina. Marina did not finish the final race, which gave an opportunity to her competitor to become one of the leaders and receive the gold medal. Varvara Yuryeva (Olympic Water Sports Center, Gelendzhik) took the third place.

Dmitriy Yeremin from Krestovskiy Island became the best among junior boys.  Despite his young age, the racer finished at the eighth place in the overall standing and outraced many more experienced participants of the Championship of Russia. Dina Zhilkina (Sailing club “Vodnik”) took the first place among junior girls.

All in all, 303 racers from 16 regions of Russia participated in the competitions. The Championship of Russia took place on September 6-10 at the Kuybyshev Reservoir on the premises of the Yacht Club “Druzhba” (“Friendship” in Russian).
